Taking It All In: What Autumn Teaches About Presence

Every year, when autumn arrives, I feel myself slow down. The air turns crisp, the light grows golden, and suddenly even the smallest things feel worth noticing. The scent of fallen leaves, the sound of wind through trees, the quiet satisfaction of seeing the world shift colors; I am tuned into all of it!

Presence comes naturally in this season. I feel it when I’m walking through the woods, leaves crunching beneath my feet. I feel it while driving along back roads, sunlight catching the trees so they seem to glow from within. It’s as if the earth is saying, “Pay attention! This won’t last.”

I feel so much joy in this time of awareness. Autumn reminds me that everything (the light, the warmth, even our own energy) has a season. It’s a chance to pause and appreciate what’s right in front of us, to be grateful for the beauty that fills our days before it slips all too soon into winter.

Autumn teaches us to take it all in while we can: the colors, the scents and the sounds of the season. To breathe deeply. To let our gaze last a little longer. To feel the simultaneous warmth of the sun and cool of the air. And to remember that even the most temporary moments are worthy of our full attention.

Sometimes, awareness is the most important thing we can achieve.
