The Earth is my God

One of these days, I’m going to wrap my head around this curse/gift called ADHD. I have soo many ideas and things I want to share with you but currently can’t seem to calm my excitement into a state of productivity.

Therefore I’ll write you a letter, maybe tease out some of the things on my mind.

You know me as an artist, but what if I told you I would give it all up if I had to choose between art and nature. Because I would in a heartbeat. I love art. I love the act of creating. I love color and beauty. But deep down, I paint to worship the Earth. And yes, the capitalization is intentional. The Earth is my “god,” my mother, myself all wrapped up into one. Not unlike a holy trinity I suppose. If you’re religious this is likely where I’ll lose you. No hard feelings. You’re welcome back if you ever see fit in the future.

Honestly I wonder how humans have strayed so far from the truth, that we are a part of this living ecosystem that is our entire planet. Everything in the natural world exists in conjunction with everything else. It is cyclical and seamless and we are lucky to have the intellectual capacity to appreciate this reality. But so many people are unaware and distracted.

And so I paint. To pay homage to the natural world; but also for you. I feel it is my personal mission to help my kindred spirits connect with the Earth. Not because you need me to do so. Surely, you are an intuitive and intelligent human being. You don’t need to be told to appreciate a forest, or meadow. You don’t need someone to encourage you to feel that longing for sunlight on your face or fog before your feet. No, what I want to offer you is something different.

I’ve been told that my artwork has a sense of nostalgia to it. That my landscapes hold both movement and stillness, much like a still frame from a distant memory. One that you can feel even more than you can envision. The gentle breeze through tall grass; the solitude of the moment.  That is the kind of peace I hope my artwork offers you.

Of course, this ever inspired brain of mine wants to do more than help you adorn your walls. I want to help you deepen your relationship with the Earth. I want to offer your tools that allow you to understand and articulate your own affinity towards nature, your own longing for reciprocity, your own biophilia. And I want it to be full of not only introspection but also joy and wonder. Afterall, we exist simply to be a part of nature, to return to the soil, and enjoy our time here.

My motto: “Grow food. Love. Laugh. Dance. Die.”

If you read this and felt a bit of hope or curiosity, I’d love to hear from you. Sometimes, when surrounded by consumer culture, the masses and “progress” it can be easy to feel like the only sane person around. Maybe knowing we are in this together is also part of my mission.
