Sketchbook Socials

I don’t think I’m the only one feeling drawn back to the the physical world; the world outside of tech and social media. We were lucky to have it back in 2020, but what solved our isolation back then has created the isolation we are feeling now.

So many of us have become strangers to our communities and society as a whole has lost it’s ability to connect with ease in the real world.

This is why I created the sketchbook social.

So what exactly is it?

Imagine walking into your local coffee shop, but instead of being greated by patrons glued to their phones and laptops, there is a beautiful arrangement of seasonal flowers center stage. On a nearby table there is an overflowing assortment of art supplies: pencils, oil pastels, conte, charcoal, watercolors, soft pastels and so on.

Surrounding the display are nature lovers and creatives with coffee and sketchbooks in hand. The mood is light, casual and welcoming. You feel home. You feel like these are your people!

This is the vibe of a Sketchbook Social event. It’s not a workshop; there are no rigid guidelines, goals or requirements. Instead, what you will find, is inspiration and everything you need to reconnect with your creativity and maybe even your community.

What to Expect

  • This is a casual social event. I will greet you when you arrive and guide towards an array of supplies. Once we all settle in with our coffee and sketchbooks, I will make introductions and encourage some lite conversation.

  • Celebrating the seasons is huge part of my creative process. I will share this with you by creating seasonal arrangements to draw inspiration from. Spring and summer sessions are bound to be full of flowers. Autumn may include bountiful arrangements of fruits or vegetables. Winter often includes arrangements of dried grasses, seed-heads, pine and winter berries.

  • There are no specific steps to follow as this is a casual sketching event. However I am happy to help make suggestions or demonstrate how to use certain supplies.

  • There is a huge array of supplies on the market and it can be daunting to know what to invest in. This is an opportunity to try out a variety of media all at once.

These are high quality artist grade materials. When it comes to pigments and richness of color, quality matters.

Note: As a nature lover, I am in return a plastic hater. I tend to avoid products packaged heavily with plastic. You will not find a large assortment of markers for that reason.

  • As mentioned above, I created these events, in part as way for people to reconnect with their local community. Rather than a classroom atmosphere of quiet concentration, I try to encourage conversation.

That said, mingling and participation is complete optional!

  • Absolutely not! This is a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Even seasoned professionals are encouraged not to take it too seriously. The idea is to be inspired by nature, explore new materials, or dip your toes back into creating altogether!

  • Of course not! I’m an introvert myself so I completely understand. In order to facilitate new relationships I will suggest introductions or conversation topics, but participation is always optional. You are welcome to simply sit, sip, draw and enjoy listening to the conversation.
